Dave Boot MIET is an electrical engineer and trainer with over 25 years across inspection and testing, renewable energy, critical systems commissioning, and vocational education.
He holds a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, is a qualified LCL assessor, and has trained more than 1,000 electricians. He is not a career trainer who read the textbook. He is an engineer who then learned to teach.

Yes. The LCL Awards IVPICR22 is a direct equivalent to the City and Guilds 2391-52 and is recognised by NICEIC, ELECSA, and other major scheme operators. If your employer or scheme provider requires the 2391-52, this qualification meets that requirement.
A laptop or desktop computer with a stable internet connection, a microphone, and ideally a camera. Sessions run in the evenings so you stay on the tools during the day. You'll receive joining instructions and session notes ahead of each session.
Two sessions per week over three to four weeks. Each session runs for approximately two hours. All sessions are live — not pre-recorded — so you can ask questions in real time.
Session notes are provided after every session and you're responsible for covering the material before the next one. We don't offer one-to-one catch-up sessions for missed theory, but the notes are comprehensive and most learners find them sufficient.
Before we book your assessment day we ask you to complete a mock assessment. It's a readiness check, not a barrier. If you don't pass first time, one free revision session is included. We do it this way because we want you to walk into that assessment room confident, not hoping for the best. We don't book your assessment until we're satisfied you're ready.
Assessment days take place at approved LCL partner centres. Our primary centre is on the south coast. We are building a network of regional centres — contact us to find out what's available in your area.
The practical assessment follows the LCL Awards IVPICR22 requirements and is conducted by qualified LCL assessors at our partner centre. We'll send you a full assessment day briefing pack once your place is confirmed so you know exactly what to expect and what to bring. A minimum of six learners is needed for a cohort to run. If we don't reach that number, you'll be offered a place on the next available cohort or a full refund of everything you've paid including your deposit. You'll know at least three weeks before the start date.
Yes. We can invoice your employer directly. Contact us at hello@valotraining.co.uk and we'll arrange it. The same payment structure applies — staged or upfront — and the place is secured once the deposit is received.
Yes. We regularly accommodate multiple learners from the same company on the same cohort. If you have two or more people who need the qualification, get in touch and we'll talk through the options. Group bookings are invoiced to the company and the same staged or upfront payment structure applies per learner. Places are allocated on a first-come basis so early contact is recommended if you want your team on the same cohort.
You can rebook a resit. The resit fee covers the assessment centre cost and is passed through to you at cost — we don't add any margin. You won't need to repeat the theory sessions.
Yes. If you refer someone who goes on to enrol and pay in full, you'll receive a £50 Screwfix or Toolstation voucher and they'll receive £50 off their course fee. Referral codes are issued on request — contact us before booking if you've been referred by someone.
